In today's society, everyone's performance is based on having the upper hand or edge towards the competition. This causes many problems because absolutely everyone is more focused on the results rather then being an ethical and humane individual. The most recent event that has happened as a result of this is the investigation into international soccer matches. Supposedly there are over 700 matches being investigated because they have been fixed and bribes have been made. I personally cannot believe the athletes that love and adore these sports allow themselves to be so naive. I understand that everything is a business and everyone needs to make money but throwing a game for a paycheck is absolutely ridiculous.
On a completely different note, but somewhat related is that of steroids and PEDS. It really drives me crazy that someone so iconic and such a big role model could even think about using these drugs. Lance Armstrong, was one of the world's biggest and most idolized figures in sports, used performance enhancing drugs and for what reason? To gain an edge on the competition? Or to make it easier on himself, so he didn't have to work as hard as the other athletes. Another example would be that of the professional baseball players. They continuously get caught using steroids to help them hit better, run faster, and do things that the other players cannot do. To me this all comes down to the fact that these athletes are simply much more lazy and are not willing to put the time into training and working hard. I was always raised on the basis that you get out what you put in. My parents made sure that I was aware that cheating or trying to gain an "illegal" advantage was not an option. This same concept can be applied to any subject. Whether that be in the classroom, the workplace, or in life itself. Granted the "illegal" actions aren't the same, the concept is. You always have to be willing to put the work in and try your hardest.
I will leave you with this last statement. No matter what you are be the best at it.
